The City of Helsinki has demonstrated exemplary proactivity and innovation as an employer in supporting the mental well-being and recovery of its employees. The city has provided its employees with comprehensive resources of Academy of Brain and successfully engaged a wide range of its staff.
Helsinki has a workplace well-being program aimed at strengthening a culture of mental well-being, enhancing leadership in workplace well-being, and improving work ability, and occupational safety. It covers topics, such as, lifestyle choices that support mental well-being, work-life balance, self-leadership, time management, and recovery. The goal is to build a culture that promotes mental well-being, increase awareness among work communities and supervisors about mental well-being and its influencing factors, and empower employees with tools to manage their own resilience and mental health.
The City of Helsinki has effectively leveraged collaboration between different departments and stakeholders within the organization, and has communicated its initiatives through various perspectives, channels, and platforms. This holistic approach has been key to its success.

Kela Is recognized for the Best Competence Management Plan

Kela has embraced the core principle of competence management: no single unit or individual can fully understand all learning and development needs. As a result, Kela has skillfully decentralized competence management responsibilities across different units, laying the foundation for broad internal collaboration within the organization.
Although this expanded collaboration is still in its early stages, Kela has already taken concrete actions. For instance, managers receive support in analyzing employee survey results, broader audiences are engaged in developing self-directed work communities, and lighter initiatives, such as, summer campaigns, which all promote continuous learning. This approach reduces the burden on individuals and distributes responsibility between both individuals and communities, strengthening overall competence and participation across the organization.
Congratulations to Kela for this exemplary and innovative competence management plan!
About Kela
The role, responsibilities, and administration of Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland) are defined by law (Act on the Social Insurance Institution of Finland). Kela is overseen by trustees appointed by the Finnish Parliament, and auditors selected by these trustees conduct its financial audits.
